There are so many misconceptions about traditional/classical Feng Shui. The purest form of Imperial Feng Shui is deeply rooted in the Chinese metaphysical pantheon, based on natural science. Imperial Feng Shui is the product of eons of observation, experimentation, and calculations. This is an earth science that takes into consideration every aspect of human life and how it can be better supported for a happier, healthier, more prosperous life.
The ancient Chinese, like all indigenous and modern peoples, were closely tied to the earth for their lives. They observed the cycles of life and the cycles of other natural phenomenon, and connected the dots. The seasons, they realized, were a natural cycle that was the result of planetary movement. They began to research the celestial realm for other hints about how lunar cycles, planetary positions, and star patterns were connected to specific, repeating occurrences. They looked to the earth’s terrain for advice about how to position their homes, palaces, and even grave sites for protection and support. Over 6000 years of information went into the creation of Feng Shui principles. But modern Western derivations, cultural superstition and religion tainted the original system. Many websites and books speak to these derivations. They are the New Age versions, which bear little to no resemblance to the original science-based Feng Shui.
What does a REAL traditional Feng Shui reading look like?
Since Imperial Feng Shui is based on the Three Powers (celestial, earth, human), the information has to include the year the building was completed (celestial chi/time), the location and orientation (earth chi) and the year and gender of those who occupy the building (human chi). That data is then entered, calculated, and analyzed to determine the natal chart of the building. It is then combined with the human charts and the current energy patterns. From that information, the knowledgeable practitioner can advise on how the client can manipulate the combined energy to their best advantage. This is not done with the introduction of trinkets or deities, though, one’s religious practices are always honored. It’s done by correcting imbalances of the interior and exterior environments, using natural elements, to create a positive and supportive flow of energy (aka chi/life force). The practitioner also advises on how the occupants’ energy can be adjusted through lifestyle and mindfulness practices. Manipulation of the environment is but one way to achieve goals and desires, but people also have to do the internal work. There is no magic to this. However, if someone has the desire and determination to do their work, then the manipulation of the environment will support them.
What DOESN’T a traditional Feng Shui reading look like?
Some New Age adaptations of Imperial Feng Shui include the use of a grid that is placed with North at the front door (no matter which direction the front door is actually located). Another uses a grid to determine life aspirations areas (romance, wealth, knowledge, etc.). Neither of these are used in Imperial Feng Shui which based on REAL compass readings and calculations to determine where the energy is most supportive of your life aspirations, based on the building’s natal chart and current energy patterns. It’s a highly personalized and complex system. The New Age derivations may have a placebo effect (like carrying a rabbit’s foot or other talisman), but they don’t address the precise energy and that’s inherent in the building and occupants of a specific site at a specific time.
