New Moon Intentions
I recently received a message from someone who stated that she wanted to learn how to set good intentions, and she asked for an example. I’d really never given it much thought since my understanding of the word “intention” is that you “intend” to do something…a proposition of action.
An intention is an action that is based on a vision and goals for your life. It is what you will act upon to enrich your life and/or that of others. It’s easy enough to write a list of goals, but without an intended action plan it’s nothing more than a wish list. You might set a goal of learning a new language, but without intentional actions like hiring a tutor or enrolling in a class, it’s wishful thinking.
Here’s the process I use to set my monthly intentions on each New Moon (remember, New Moon = New Beginnings):
1) I think about what my goals were/are and my list of intentions toward those goals over the past 30, 60, 90 days…or more.
2) I assess whether my actions matched my previous intentions
3) I assess whether my intended actions were effective in reaching my goal for the enrichment of myself and others
4) I may add new intentions and/or restate previous intentions if it’s warranted
5) I get my head in the game by spending some time meditating on my stated intentions for either inspiration in carrying out my stated intentions or creating a subset action list and timeline.
6) I may research sources that will help me move forward with my intentions, schedule time to carry out my intentions, or find other ways to keep my head in the game to realize my intensions.
It’s important to keep in mind that your intentions are not always going to be earth-shattering, but they will be enriching and often life-altering. You may set an intention to smile at people you meet in your day-to-day encounters to make them feel acknowledged and seen…which will enrich their lives while you make a human connection.
If possible, keep a journal of your New Moon intentions and reflections. You’ll be surprised how empowering it can be!
Happy New Moon!!
